Wandsworth Art Markets and art trails: artists and makers needed!

Join us and other wonderful artists during our Christmas Art Markets, art workshops and art trails in Wandsworth

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December - a celebration of art in Wandsworth!

In partnership with Wandsworth CouncilWandsworth Art and various stakeholders, we are delighted to be able to give Wandsworth based artists and makers a new opportunity to show and sell their work, meet with fellow artists and makers, and deliver (paid) art/craft workshops for the public at a series of art markets taking place across the borough, on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December.

The deadline for artist applications is Thursday 3rd November - don't delay - submit your application in good time so that you can be part of this exciting project!

Art markets

We are setting up art markets across three sites in Wandsworth: Nine Elms, Putney and Tooting and artists/makers will simply need to bring their works to the venue, set up their table (placed under a gazebo or marquee - all supplied by us) and exhibit, and hopefully sell, as well as engage with fellow artists/makers. Alongside the art markets, we are programming art/craft workshops and hoping to add music to create a special atmosphere for artists and visitors. You can register to bring your artwork/crafts, below.

Market locations:

All Saints Church, Tooting SW17 8DQ

St Mary's Church, Putney High Street, SW15 1SN

New Union Square, Nine Elms, SW11 7BN

Market times:

12pm to 4pm - provisional times

Art trails

We are inviting businesses based close to each of the market venues to open their premises to art and culture, either by displaying artwork within their shop window (printed onto vinyl), or by hanging or displaying artwork within their premises.

You can register your interest in having your work displayed at a local business, below.

Art or craft workshop facilitators

Alongside the art markets at our three venues, we want to provide members of the public with the opportunity to take part in art workshops, and we have paid opportunities for artists, makers and art workshop facilitators.

Register for more information via the form below.

Display your artwork on the Wandsworth Art Market Map

With at least 10,000 maps printed and distributed to residents and civic hubs across the borough, there are further opportunities for artists to have their artwork displayed on our printed materials.

If you'd like to have your work displayed as part of the map, please indicate so via the form below.

Fees

Wandsworth Council, as part of a long-term commitment to supporting local artists, have invested in these opportunities to ensure fees are accessible as possible.

FAQ and T&C of attendance:

Who is behind this project?

The markets, art workshops and art trails are being organised by Citizens Art London CIC - a social enterprise set up to support developing artists and to bring art to communities. Citizens Art London CIC has been commissioned by Wandsworth Council to deliver this project.

What type of art and craft is permitted/not permitted?

Open - applications are judged on their merit and we'd love to hear from visual artists, photographers, makers, crafters, sculptors etc.

What do the fees cover?

The fees cover various aspects of the work involved in delivering this project: marketing and promotional campaigns (see below), provision of market equipment (gazebos, tables, banners etc), our costs (materials, venue fees and staff), the set-up and set-down on market days and the provision (where possible) of live entertainment to accompany the market. You will simply need to attend, set up your table and commence exhibiting/trading.

I want to attend a specific market location, is this possible?

We are asking artists to list their preferences for the three locations. It is not going to be possible to allocate all artists/makers to their first preference, but we do assure you that extensive work will go into ensuring that each venue is well attended by both the local resident community and those across the borough.

When do I need to pay?

Payment, in full, is required upon receipt of an invoice. Your participation is only confirmed once you have made payment in full.

What is the cancellation policy?

The upfront payment of pitch fees covers the extensive work involved in promoting the markets, as well as set-up/set-down and the provision of tables/gazebos (the costs of which are incurred ahead of market dates). As a result, pitch fees act as a deposit and are non-refundable, except in the event that we have to cancel the market for severe weather or any other reason/s.

In the unlikely event that we have to cancel the event for whatever reason, this will be communicated to all participating artists immediately, by email, and full refunds will be offered OR the opportunity to transfer your booking to another date, subject to availability.

Do I need insurance?

Yes, all participating artists are required to have their own Public Liability Insurance in place. If you do not currently have this, the Artists Union of England provides insurance cover as part of their membership - more information here.

Citizens Art London CIC take no responsibility for any claims against individual traders participating in the market/s.

How many artists will be attending each market?

It varies from location to location, but we expect each venue to have at least 15/20 artists on each day.

Will there be any other outdoor traders, other than artists, attending the market?

Yes. We are programming art workshops alongside each art market and we are also hoping to have a programme of live music and/or other forms of performance art, to create a welcoming atmosphere and environment for artists and visitors alike.

Promotion and marketing will include (but not be limited to):

  • An ongoing campaign to promote market dates (and participating artists at each market) across the Wandsworth Art website and social media, as well as Citizens Art London CIC and partner social media platforms

  • Similar campaign across Twitter and Instagram

  • Direct marketing (map drops) to neighbouring residential areas - 10,000+ copies

  • Press release to local/regional newspapers and to event listing websites

  • Sourcing partners/sponsors to help promote/enhance events

Participating artists are encouraged to follow @wandsworthart and @citizensartldn, and to use the social media tag provided to you as part of your information pack for all posts relating to your attendance at the markets.

What is the application process?

Upon completion and submission of the application form above, your application will be reviewed against these T&C's and the criteria below.

Once an artist has had their application approved, they will be issued an invoice confirming the dates they are invited to attend at their chosen location/s.

Once pitch fees are received in full, their pitch will be secured and until fees are paid in full, the pitch is not secured.

What selection criteria do you use when choosing artists?

  1. Selection of participating artists will be based upon information provided in completed application forms and examples of work submitted/shared on artists social media

  2. Preference will be given to artists based within the borough of Wandsworth - applications from artists based outside Wandsworth will not be accepted

  3. Selection will factor the artwork, price point and willingness / capacity of artists to promote the market and fee payment by deadline provided

  4. The selection process is an equal opportunities process and is not influenced by gender, race, religion, belief, disability or age

THE DECISION TO ACCEPT OR REJECT AN APPLICATION IS FINAL

What do you need to bring to each event?

  • Your artwork (!)

  • Your Public Liability Insurance cover note

  • Your fully charged payment system (very important, obviously!)

  • Any battery operated lighting you wish to use

  • A cloth or table cover/s

  • Any signage you wish to display

  • Tape/scissors are likely to be useful and string is ALWASY useful

  • Bin liners/rubbish bags for your waste

  • Antibacterial hand-sanitiser on your stall will provide reassurance to members of the public (see covid19 preparation point below).

The only other thing we would ask you to bring is your smile and a flexible approach - our many previous events have gone well (and been great fun), but as many of you will likely be aware; unexpected challenges can often pop-up at events and these will be quickly and easily overcome when everyone adopts a positive, solution focused approach.

Filming and photography

We reserve the right to take photographs and capture video of the market during operation, for promotional purposes, and this includes the potential use of drone videography. If you do not wish to be captured in any photography or filming, please notify the organiser in advance of your attendance. Similarly, if you would like copies of photographs or video, please get in touch.
